Our story and where we are located
Dating back to the 1800s, Podere Casavecchia was once part of a vast estate that stretched from the hills of Chianni down to the plain below in the valley of the Sterza River. It is situated in a typical hillside location within an area of historical and naturalistic interest. Rich in native plants, mushrooms, and various animal species, its agricultural focus has been on organic olive cultivation. Additionally, it currently houses our sports horses and the equestrian vaulting school, which I personally oversee, and its forest provides firewood.
Our family chose this place for its geographical location, with truly remarkable panoramic views spanning over 180 degrees, encompassing Volterra and the Pietracassia Rock of Etruscan origin. The farmhouse’s authenticity was also a deciding factor. Over the years, we’ve uncovered the history of its previous tenant farmers, a history of hospitality and protection that the estate immediately imparts, immersing visitors in the magic of nature, art, and history, all within a consistently pleasant climate.
Here, my children were born and raised, our activities have flourished, and the history of the estate continues to yield positive results, from one generation to the next, among old and new friends, and anyone willing to share in it.
The estate is located in Chianni (1km), in the province of Pisa, facing Volterra (30km), and close to the thermal town of Casciana Terme (6km). It is set in the classic Tuscan landscape of rolling hills, Mediterranean scrub, and gentle slopes.
Chianni, since the times of the Etruscan and Roman settlements, has been known as an area rich in woods and game, representing a wild and impenetrable region with strong and essential characteristics for travelers of that time. “Land of woods, castles, mills, mines” – this is how the early historians of the 1000s spoke of this territory, and as early as 1113, the bishoprics of Pisa and Volterra were vying for control of it. It enjoys an exceptional geographical and panoramic location, which is why, starting directly from the house, you can explore the unspoiled and captivating corners of Mediterranean nature, such as the Ghiaccione waterfalls, by walking through the surroundings.
From this small medieval village in the heart of Tuscany, you can reach all the major art cities of Tuscany (Pisa, Siena, Monteriggioni, Volterra, San Gimignano, Florence, Lucca…) within 30 to 90 minutes by car. You can also easily access the beaches of the Etruscan Coast (Populonia and the Gulf of Baratti) or the charming nearby villages of the Val di Cecina. It can, therefore, be an excellent starting point for art, food and wine, and historical and naturalistic itineraries, in every season of the year.
